Urban Meyer To The Jaguars, How He Fills Out His Staff May Define His Tenure
Quick Note: Former Texas Longhorn, USF Head Coach, and recent Alabama Analyst Charlie Strong has been hired by Urban Meyer.

Culture and Managing Personalities
The Jaguars got their guy, and one of the reasons the hire has a good chance of working has everything to do with Urban Meyer being a culture guy and the CEO of his football teams. He is a coach that stresses accountability, and as a former psychology major, Meyer finds different ways to motivate a football team's differing personalities. He understands it's not a one size fits all approach. These are all factors that will play a role in whether Meyer will succeed at the NFL level.
Meyer had a lot of talent as a College Coach; The Margin is a lot thinner in the NFL.
Urban Meyer is used to having the most talented team in whatever conference he is competing in, or at least he builds it to that. Like Nick Saban, Meyer has had the luxury of several 1st round players on a team in a single season. It is not that easy in the NFL, where the margins are much smaller.
Urban Meyer's Staff
Urban Meyer needs to hire NFL level coordinators. If he goes into this venture hiring college-level coordinators, I believe that he will put himself in a position to fail.
Some candidates that are in consideration are as follows;
Scott Linehan (Passing Game Coordinator, LSU) Former
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday night that the former Cowboys and Lions OC (and one-time NFL head coach) is a candidate to join Urban Meyer's staff in Jacksonville.
Brian Johnson (Offensive Coordinator, Florida)
Johnson's development of Kyle Trask is why he is on the list. Florida Gator offense averaged more than 500 yards per game this fall. Johnson played for Urban at Utah.
Teryl Austin (Secondary Coach, Steelers)
A former Meyer assistant (DC at Florida in 2010), Austin also served as defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions under Jim Caldwell. Austin Coached at Michigan in the late '90s under Lloyd Carr.
Kerry Coombs (Defensive Coordinator, Ohio State)
Urban might pursue Ohio State DC Kerry Coombs, who coached DB's with the Tennessee Titans in 2018 before returning to coach at Ohio State, taking over as the DC in 2020. Coombs coached DB's under Urban Meyer before taking the Tennessee Titans jobs as their DB's coach.
Brian Hartline (WR Coach, Ohio State)
Hartline has been at Ohio State for a few years now and has taken an already talent riddled WR position to the next level. The former NFL WR and Ohio State WR could be a candidate for Urban Meyer's new staff in Jacksonville.
Corey Dennis (QB Coach, Ohio State)
Dennis is Urban Meyer's son in law and considered to be a rising star in the coaching ranks at Ohio State. Dennis has been on Ohio State's staff the past six seasons, including working the past two seasons with Day, wide receivers coach Brian Hartline and the Buckeyes' quarterbacks and receivers. Dennis was a quality control coach before taking over as Ohio State QB coach in 2020.
Charlie Strong (Defensive Analyst, Alabama)
There is a strong discussion that Strong will join Urban's staff in Jacksonville in some capacity. Charlie Strong is a former Texas and USF head coach. He worked as a DC on Urban's Florida Gators staff, so there is a connection.
Whoever Urban Meyer chooses to be on his staff; he must consider the differing schematics between the college and the pro game and the personalities. The most important decision he will make will be the offensive and defensive coordinator.
